Found in the pedestrianised part of Monmouth city centre, Bistro Prego is a restaurant with a friendly, relaxed and informal atmosphere. Thanks to its location, car parking is conveniently close but there’s no engine noise and hurried busyness; instead, you can sit back and people-watch as residents go about their day in this quaint foodie street.
Having earned an AA rosette, chef-patron Steve Robbins is proud to freshly prepare all dishes for his patrons, including the popular starter of scallops with Provençal sauce, the wonderful main of vincisgrassi (a lasagne with Parma ham, truffle and porcini mushrooms) and a selection of other regularly changing pasta dishes. Fillet steaks and a selection of game such as rabbit, venison and duck make up the remainder of the menu, with produce sourced locally wherever possible.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that such luxurious dishes should mean a visit to Prego would break the bank; but you’ll find everything is fairly priced right up to, and including, the wine list, which offers 30 varieties.
A two-course Sunday lunch is very appealing at just £12.50, and a pre-theatre menu is available too. To top it all off, you can also rent one of Prego’s eight en-suite bedrooms.
